Looking Back on the Past Year
The end of the year is a time for reflection on its accomplishments. Our 2018 has been busy and impressive, to say the least. Looking back over the past year, it has brought a great number of projects, collaborations, outstanding student work and engaging alumni stories.
In 2018, Willem de Kooning Academy and Codarts hosted the 15th ELIA Biennial Conference in Rotterdam and shared the achievements of the Double Degree programme during RASL Symposium. We have collaborated with the universities overseas and the ones next door as well as museums, worked with the companies on societal issues and on developing of futuristic concepts, have participated in festivals and organised our own. We have launched a new series of events, published researches, and are preparing to welcome the new Research Professorships that will strengthen WdKA's cross-disciplinary curriculum, and showcased the work of our graduates whose graduation projects received great reviews.
Our students have worked on solving environmental, societal and identity problems, created new worlds and prototyped an extraterrestrial printing structure, designed the tools to encourage commitment to diversity, initiated the discourse of diversity and decolonization, created awareness regarding consumption and privacy, advised Parliament on the integration tools, won the Threshold and Research Awards, and have proven that design is nothing short of magic.
Our students received awards and nominations, too many to mention all of them, aroused controversy, shined in performances, got scouted by the star designers for the internship, we can go on forever. They have been smart, creative, open, entrepreneurial and we are very proud of their achievements.
We are also proud to boast a diverse body of alumni, whose practice experiences, achievements and thoughts are shared on this website and whose successes are too numerous to fit in this article.
2018 is coming to an end. A new year full of new opportunities, brilliant ideas and collaborations will start very soon. We expect 2019 to be equally fantastic and vibrant and hope you will stay with us or will join us as a new student, partner, collaborator or visitor of our events and website.
