Data Design (Commercial Practices)

THIS WON’T LAST

The world is captured in data. Each day we generate more than 2.5 exabytes of data. One exabyte equals 1.000.000 terabyte. As users, we daily generate photos, videos, messages, memories - and even trash or oxygen. Data is saved and stored with one purpose: being accessible in the future. But is data everlasting - and what is the purpose of it, if data is temporary? Students of the minor ‘data design’ have researched this phenomenon. During this expo, you will see a variety of their applications and insights on ephemeral/temporary data and what their potential could be.

UNFRAMING SOCIETY

In contemporary society, we often make priorities that work against us. We try to live as good as possible and search for a balance between extremes, but is this the right way? In this exhibition, seven designers put different social issues up for discussion. They invite the visitor to challenge their view on, among other things, autism, love and use of time. HOW TO BE HUMAN

As digital technologies become more integral to our lives, the way we differentiate between ‘human’ and ‘non-human’ becomes less binary. WE, THE PEOPLE

Hereby declare that all are cordially invited to witness the final presentations of the Minor+ Visual Culture, class of ’17
Throughout the week of December 19th, all shall behold the power of visual culture within this year’s theme of populism.
Presentations approach populist themes of students’ own choices and put those to the question. Themes are ranging from politics and society to technology and advertising. From the colonial past to the now and the future. All are welcome for the opening on December 19th, starting at 17.00h at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Wijnhaven 61, 1st floor. Dare to have your senses triggered and frame of mind challenged. By the people, for the people.

Cultural diversity (Social Practices)

NOT A SINGLE STORY

'Not a single story' reveals, shares, challenges you with the work of a group of creative pioneers who are in the last year of their studies at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. This city has 630.000 residents from more than 170 different nationalities. Diversity, like migration, is a politically sensitive question, in this city as in many others.

We, as the creative pioneers have addressed these questions from many differing perspectives; exploring in our work concepts such as white privilege, institutional racism and social inclusion. Thinking through these perspectives to position ourselves as future designers and finding ways to represent the stories we have collected over a four-month research period. Some of us want to start a dialogue, some want to make a statement and others want to lose themselves in the subject matter at hand.
