The Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (WdKA/RUAS), offers a variety of bachelor and master programs in the field of visual culture, art, design, education in arts, and leisure management.
The Majors (of which Fashion Design is one) are the entry point of study for all Bachelor students. The curriculum of the WdKA is unique because of its interdisciplinary education projects. Students from all disciplines meet each other (and collaborate) in the Practices for about half their studies starting from year 1 - these Practices are interdisciplinary research contexts. Together with the highly unique Stations (advanced workspaces), the Majors and Practices form the three pillars of the WdKA’s curriculum.

About WdKA Fashion Design
We aim to prepare our fashion design students for a future in the continuously changing professional field of fashion. We train them to work within the existing fashion system as well as to hack the system. We offer the hardware (design methods and technology) and the software (skills and attitude) for this.
Fashion designers work from the perspective of a creative and critical vision of contemporary developments in fashion and society. Topics like sustainability, new ethics, virtual fashion, collaborative working, all named as the most urgent by both our students as well as our professionally active team of tutors, are all addressed in WdKA’s project-based education.
Professional diversity is key: we stimulate students in giving a new meaning to the profession, encourage independence in self-initiated projects and electives, and facilitate collaborations in interdisciplinary practices. We offer introductions and education in both traditional and future fashion skills like 3D creation and visualization, interactive design, and bio design.
Education in virtual prototyping, 3D-visualization, and presenting in the virtual realm is embedded in the curriculum from year 1 onward. Traditional ways of presentation (like yearly catwalk shows) have made room for alternative ways of presenting, allowing students to opt for a complete virtual graduation project.
The student is the future!
