Dwangmatig handmatig

Compulsive manual. Having an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can cause you to get stuck in normal daily routines. This psychological disorder is characterized by great repetitiveness, rhythm and patterns.

An own world, in which movements must be repeated multiple times.

Again and again, without anyone noticing.

The shame and the uncomfortable cause this world to remain practically unseen.

Even though it is so beautiful.

I want to reveal it.

It is an experience that others don't understand.

I jam, I crash. Like some sort of robot I get stuck in my movements.

Only I know why I do this, repeatedly.

OCD has something beautiful, something crazy, something surrealistic.

Having an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can cause you to get stuck in normal daily routines. This psychological disorder is characterized by great repetitiveness, rhythm and patterns.

This autobiographical project shows the thoughts and routines that I have withheld for so many years. I regret that this psychological disorder has received so little attention, while its impact can be so serious and debilitating with consequences like depression, social isolation and even suicide.

Dwangmatig handmatig

In my interactive graduation project ‘Compulsive Manual’, I show the beautiful and ‘crazy’ side of OCD: the repetitive and halting movements (compulsions), that are usually kept hidden for others to see due to the shame that surrounds them. However, this disorder is not only beautiful and interesting to watch: dark thoughts (obsessions) induce the compulsions. This side too is shown in my project, but one can only see this if you, as the viewer, are open to experience OCD yourself..
