What I've Learned

Collaborating with Different Disciplines

What did you learn during your this project?

Eight dancers, two fashion designers, two composers, one of me, and only ten days for ten minutes of fame. No excuse for me not to accept this exciting challenge. From the first moment, I was surprised to see how the mix of different disciplines led our new born team into quit a fascinating creative process. Within this collaboration, we had the chance to get a very close look into each other’s process too. It was really interesting to experience how we all started to create by using our own diverse working methods. I didn’t realise before how I already has created an authentic way of working that felt very ‘natural’ to me, and that this evokes a certain ‘signature’ in my visual work.

What didn’t you expect to learn but experienced as a bonus?

The collaboration forced me to use some of my skills that I was ‘forgotten’ during WDKA. This opened up a new personal perspective for me and gave me energy to continue using these abilities in my personal projects.

Did you gain any insights that can be used in your further life and study?

I was very surprised how much I liked to design for performances. I realised I finally, literally, found a stage for my (video)installations, and that it is very important for me to collaborate with different disciplines to realise my dreams.

I was surprised to see how the mix of different disciplines led our new born team into quit a fascinating creative process.

What kept you awake at night?

Since we had to realize the performance in a very short time, I didn’t have that much time to lay in my bed and stare at the roof. These same ‘time’ was the thing I was worried about at some moments. I started very enthusiastic with big ideas and it was sometimes quite stressful to realize the plans I promised my team.

What was the greatest obstacle?

I guess time was one of the greatest obstacles as well. We came up with a very ambitious plan and it really needed some good planning skills to bring our concept come to life on stage. To be really honest, another obstacle was to convince the teacher of the dance academy that I wasn’t going to make a crazy artwork that made the dancers invisible. But luckily everything worked out in the end.
