Our organisation

The Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA), part of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (RUAS), is a leading international academy for bachelor and master programs in media, art, design, leisure and art education.

WdKA's mission and vision are to develop new ideas about the relevance of the artist, educator, producer or designer and to help students become the artistic professionals who will respond to tomorrow's world with critical vision, energy and care. Our education is distinguished by three pillars: majors, practices and unique stations, focused on research through making. This encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and gives our students the opportunity to become proficient in both their profession and the context in which they will work. With approximately 400 colleagues, WdKA educates more than 2,500 students.

About Advertising & Beyond

The speed and complexity of technological, political, social and economic developments strongly influence practices in art, design, branding and digital communication. Advertising & Beyond has approximately 175 students over the 4 years of the education and a small interdisciplinary teaching team. We believe creativity is the key that contributes to the future in a positive and meaningful way. The professional world is looking for young creatives with multiple talents and skills, who look beyond the borders of their primary disciplines. We teach students to develop in how creativity becomes more effective. In combination with exploring artificial intelligence, doing research and experimenting within a theoretical framework they become conscious of the power of their creative and strategic talents and how to apply that to influence audiences and society, today and in the future. In this major we teach students to become familiar with skills and tools of advertising, from an artistic, ethical and inclusive point of view. They’ll learn to communicate and present concepts and ideas that create attention and impact.

What are you going to do?

The Major Advertising & Beyond is open to hiring several tutors for year 1, 2, 3 and 4 with a focus on concept, branding, art direction and copy.

Position year 1: you are a conceptual maker and are able to create a strong base for the students to discover their own identity from different perspectives.

Position year 2: you are able to inspire the student, from your expertise as creative director, to look at current issues in society to form their own opinion and to create and present urgent and communicative work.

Position year 3: you can inspire and guide students, from your expertise as creative director, towards their upcoming internship in the 2nd half of the academic year.

Position year 4: you are able to coach students to reach their full advertising and beyond potential on a self-initiated project.

It is not possible to apply for a specific year.

Tasks will include:

  • Teaching, as part of a team, possibly in courses ranging from the first year to the fourth.
  • Participating in the development of classes for the program.
  • Participating in assessments, both in the context of classes you are teaching, and in stand-alone assessment moments such as annual competence-based assessments and graduation.
  • Responding with flexibility to a workload that varies over the course of the academic year.

Are we looking for you?

We are looking for people that want to share their expertise with the next generation. Professionals that are excited working with an interdisciplinary team within a project-based education. The ability to work collaboratively is a must, as all of our education is team-based. You should be excited about questioning established norms through design and be a proponent of critical new media literacy.

Previous experience in education is a pro, but we encourage very motivated creatives with unusual experience and diverse backgrounds and talents to apply. We would like to enlarge cultural diversity within our team. We’re searching for enthusiastic and thoughtful teachers who are interested in helping the Advertising & Beyond major to stay ahead of the developments in the creative practice. The ideal candidates will have a desire to grow in the position and take an active role in the life of the program and who are keen to develop their educational practice alongside an existing professional design practice. Next to this we ask:

  • Preferably working in the communication or creative industry approached from a multi-disciplinary perspective as a creative director.
  • A master degree, favourably in design or a relevant program.
  • Familiarity and an ability to engage with design and applied art communities is a major asset.
  • A commitment to developing new didactic forms of design education within the bachelor Advertising & Beyond program is an asset.
  • EU/ECC work authorization.
  • A good command of verbal and written English (Dutch is a plus).

What do we offer you?

WdKA likes to invest in motivated and well-trained employees. Working at WdKA means that you can use time and facilities (via unlimited access to our Stations) for professionalization. To further your pedagogical development, you need to be willing to undertake pedagogical courses i.e. BKE (Basis Kwalificatie Examinering) and Competency Assessment Course.

Our secondary benefits also include access to different kinds of support and discounts by RUAS and an attractive pension plan. In addition, we offer a good work-life balance through more than 50 days off per year for full-time employment.
