Meet Our Tutors: Alain van Duuren

Alain van Duuren
Sat 6 May

Name, the branch of knowledge, subject:

Alain van Duuren, concepting, events and entrepreneurial skills.

What inspires you?

I don’t think inspiration is really something specific, but that it’s more about the person, in other words how you approach it, and also how you approach life. For me it’s important to look at the world with an open and curious attitude. Inspiration means recognising those elements that activate me in my creativity and enthusiasm, and that could really be anything. People from my immediate environment, but also strangers I meet in the night, on the street or wherever. Buildings, music, locations... Anything really. I can also lose myself in YouTube, in books, comics, and of course the internet. But I think that right now my son is really my greatest inspiration. The way he looks at the world with a kind of chronic curiosity is so refreshing and at the same time so recognisable.

What defines you as a tutor? Your strongest points?

That would probably be my enthusiasm, my energy and my connection to the professional practice. I’m passionate about my profession and I think it’s very important to inspire and motivate students to continue developing themselves. But sometimes I can get a bit carried away in my enthusiasm. I also try to connect everything to their own living environment, to the actual practice, and from that perspective, to theory.

A true innovator for me is Blue City!

What is your dream/goal as a tutor?

That students and tutors should forget about getting good marks, and focus on development rather than assessments.

Name one item on your bucket list.

To live abroad for a while, I still don’t know where.

Whom would you call true innovator?

Blue City!
