Please join us in the Research Station (WH.00.316) for a sneak peek into and celebration of Psofotopia, Martina Raponi’s new book on noise and sounding out the unheard, with Martina Raponi (WdKA tutor, Minor Visual Culture), Rachel Beckles-Wilson and Florian Cramer (WdKA research professors). No registration needed!
Psofotopia combines the Ancient Greek words for “loud sound or noise” (psófos) and “place” (tópos). Psofotopias are zones of uncertainty and ambiguity, spaces of noise and confusion positioned between the utopian and the dystopian, beyond positive or negative judgment. The identification of psofotopias is a step towards theorizing the unheard. This book explores sound beyond aurality and audibility, making the case that sound is more than just what is registered in listening.
Research in Perspective hosts conversations about research in practice at the WdKA-Piet Zwart Institute. It is a forum for connecting, sharing information and insights, and honoring the diversity of approaches, methods, and practices involved in the research we undertake. Research in Perspective invites guests and welcomes proposals for sessions. Convened by Miriam Rasch, Vivian Sky Rehberg, and Renée Turner, coordinated via the Research Station and Research Center.
