Minors

Autonomous Practice Minors:

Critical Studies

Critical Studies is where artistic practice and critical analysis of society meet. They may seem alien to each other at first. But whereas philosophers critically analyze culture with words, politically engaged artists, designers and educators do so with objects, actions and images. During this minor you will learn how society is grounded in ideologies, norms, and beliefs, and how you can critically engage with them, in your work as an artist, designer, or educator.

Public & Private

Public space is a political place that is under constant pressure of many agendas. Privately owned “public” space abides to the rules of neoliberal market economy and not to public interests. Private spaces therefore enforce the economic, racial, and gender hierarchies of that system. As a student you will carry out research into public and private space, but first and foremost: you will engage with it. The goal of this minor is to reclaim public space, by interacting with it. You will use your skills and knowledge as a maker to intervene in public space and subvert or challenge the norms that govern it.

Hacking

In the minor Hacking we explore unintended uses within systems. We can all recognize how the world doesn’t work for everyone. But how can we hack systems, create alternatives, and ask critical questions? Think about ‘reverse-engineering’, a method we use within Hacking: by opening and analyzing how a device is made, you not only understand how it works, but you have also created the possibility to redesign it. But how do we redesign or subvert social, economic, and political systems?

Social Practice Minors:

New Earth

New Earth questions sustainability paradigms like the circular economy and researches equitable development in the wake of climate change, looking towards design and cultural production as political acts.

Powerplay

In Powerplay we work on formulating counter-narratives: stories that subdue and deconstruct assumptions, stereotypes, one-sided histories and beliefs. Counter-narratives are used here as a way of acknowledging, making space for, and listening to those whose stories are marginalised and silenced, while also finding new arrangements where they could be heard, seen, felt, and made sense of.

Cultural Diversity

With increased mobility and mixing of cultures, growing up among a diversity of people is now the norm in many cities of the world. Differences related to gender, generation, religion, sexuality, etc. which add to the complexities of people living together in urban areas. "Hidden diversity” is also a relevant factor in this minor: a diversity of experiences shape a person’s life and world views but are not readily apparent on the outside, unlike the usual markers of diversity such as race, nationality, gender, ethnicity through their embodied experience and knowledge.

Materials & Systems

Students in the minor Materials & Systems are first and foremost makers: they get their hands dirty; love spending time in the stations and explore all the technologies and skills available there; they are curious and enjoy tinkering and experimenting. This minor allows you to fully explore that side of art and design. You will dive into materials, how and to what use they are made, but you will also explore the social and economic systems in which they

circulate. Through making, we question in this minor why we make, how we make, and the impact it has on the world.

Honours Practice Minors:

Visual Culture+ / WdKA minor+

(This programme is only taught in person, not online—unless specified differently).

Visual Culture is a term used to describe the combination of all visual expressions within culture. Ranging from pop culture to governmental surveillance, visual culture is present within society at large. It is this omnipresence that is subjected to critical analysis and speculative reimagination in the minor Visual Culture at the WdKA.

Re-imagining Tomorrow through Arts & Sciences (RASL)

(This programme is only taught in person, not online—unless specified differently). How can we learn to approach the complex issues of the 21st century (such as the waste problem, climate crisis, global poverty, etc.)? These issues are of such a different size, complexity, and scale, that dealing with them has to contend with methods, attitudes, and expertise that transcend disciplinary confinements. Alternative futures have to be imagined and visualized, and this can only be achieved through the combination and validation of different bits of knowledge (societal, artistic, academic), through which we can start to create, to re-imagine, and to decompose and recompose.

Leisure- en Events Management Minor:

City Branding

Events Strategisch Design

Events strategic design; klinkt leuk, feestjes organiseren!

Kunsteducatie Minor:

Making Art in Education
