What is your occupation now?

I am a photographer, video journalist and cross-media storyteller.

What did you gain from your study at WdKA?

What I learned at the WdKA is endless freedom of your own practice. Don’t feel limited to the use of your own discipline but get inspired by other disciplines and get the best of all. View Lou's graduation project on this site.

Favourite WdKA memory?

I look back with pleasure of my study at the WdKA. I have so many great memories but as a speciality the access we had to the workshop spaces, the Stations. We were allowed to try out everything we wanted: from welding, sawing wood structures to creating ceramics.

Play, don’t take everything too serious

What is the future of your profession in your opinion?

I hope there are a lot more innovations in de discipline of journalism. Most of the stories still follow a traditional narration. I hope multimedia narration will enhance journalistic storytelling.

You never leave your house without…?

My notebook to write down inspiration and accidental brain spins. Inspiration is everywhere and most of the times thoughts just fall in the right place during walking around the streets.

Any words of advice to future students?

Play, don’t take everything too serious. As long as you have an idea of where you want to go, you will certainly find a way there. And in the meantime, don’t forget to enjoy it.

The world is now trying to cope with stress and anxiety caused by COVID 19 pandemic. Everything and everyone seems to undergo radical changes. How does the present situation influence your mindset and your design practice?

In the current social issue influences my mindset in a way that I notice that people become suspicious towards each other. This is a development that will drive people further apart from each other.  In the beginning of the pandemic, the extreme situation had united people. People were looking out for each other, helping with groceries, respected others' views. And now I notice a very negative development of less trust in each other. However close the world used to be, some people are now further apart than ever.

Name your favourite recent project.

Currently, my part of the exhibition 'Rotterdam Werkt’ in the Dutch Photo Museum. An exhibition about commissioned photography from 1864 until the present.

Future plans and hopes.

Sinds the world is becoming increasingly dependent on digital communication, digital storytelling becomes more needed than ever. I hope this will grow and people will be more open to it. And maybe in the future, we all will watch the news through VR glasses.
