Manifestations 2018: Will the Future Design Us?

Veemgebouw, 9th floor
Torenallee 100, Eindhoven
20 t/m 28 October, 11:00 - 18:00

Manifestations focuses the spotlight on art and projects that investigate the ‘matches’ and ‘mismatches’ between people and technology. Artists, like no others, are able to put technology and unstoppable developments in a different, unexpected perspective. They approach technology not as profit-driven solutions to increase convenience, but instead research, play, ask and show how technology can help build a sweeter, more humane world.

These young, often recently graduated artists, are not affected by a blind love for technology; instead, they approach technological developments as reciprocal: people develop technology but people are in turn also undeniably shaped by technology. The reciprocity between technology and humanity, this mutual influencing, is oftentimes exciting and fun, sometimes a bit problematic or scary; it can feel very close and intimate, and sometimes it is pretty distant or unkind.

Participating alumni: Jeanine Verloop (Reawaken)Caio Vita (Imprecisely Human), Rogier van der Galiën (The Slippery Phish Project)Annemiek Höcker (The Search for Submission).

The designers have come up with the creative solutions to ensure that no less, but more visitors come to The Hague in that period. Our alumni, design duo Studio Bureau (Frans van Ditzhuijzen and Thijs van Dalen) are among the nominees. Read here about the project they have submitted.

SupertoysSupertoys Merle Flügge (PZI, 2017)

Broeinest
Torenallee 45, Eindhoven
20 t/m 28 October, 10:00 - 18:00

"We are modern animists: we believe that the objects and furniture surrounding us are becoming more and more alive. We ask ourselves if objects can have a life of their own and if they will become conscious entities in our social and cultural constructs. Will we treat them as pets in the near future?

Our passion for design, storytelling and science-fiction is the starting point for each project. In our work, we explore how objects come to "life" and the thinking behind it: how this completely changes our relationship with objects. We like to play with vibrant colours, ambiguous shapes, the imaginary and also use artificial intelligence and robotics to explore this change. Thanks to Broeinest who invited us into their trend-worlds and Abet Laminati for their colourful decorative laminate we can tell the story of SupertoysSupertoys and our dream of a modern animist society."

Already in 1998 trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort conceived the idea technology blending in our day-to-day analogue life. 20 years later she revisits her concept and teams up with Google. This results in the installation Softwear that investigates how electronic devices could become more tactile and seamlessly integrated to workplaces and homes, through the introduction of elements such as textiles. Isaac Monté, our alumnus and a tutor at Product Design is one of the participants.

Robot Love

Melkfabriek, Eindhoven
20 t/m 28 October, 11:00 - 18:00

Robot Love is an interactive exhibition about the love between humans and robots. More than 50 artists, designers and scientists ask you whether robots are capable of love.

Writer and artist and WdKA Autonomous Practices tutor (study path Hacking) Ine Poppe has developed chatbot PIP together with Marc Buma and Bart Roorda. A chatbot is a computer programme with which you can have a conversation via the keyboard. PIP has a special and clear mission: to investigate whether people can learn from robots about love. Some of these conversations can be listened to in the audio piece at the exhibition. When interested, you can still have a conversation with PIP at www.robotlove.nl.

Pathfinders: Felt Experience versus Embodied Statistics

Veem Floor 2
Torenallee 80, Eindhoven
20 t/m 28 October, 11:00 - 18:00

This installation is a part of a shared show by Gaspard Bos (tutor WdKA, Social Practices), Lilian van Daal en Julia Janssen, the recipients of the Talent Development Grant (Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie).

Pathfinders invites participants to experience and play with anxieties that our present-day risk society projects upon prospective parents. Volverium / Thijs Biersteker

TAC
Vonderweg 1, Eindhoven
20 t/m 28 October, 11:00 - 19:00

Volverium (Thijs Biersteker, Advertising, 2009) creates awareness for the impact of algorithms that result in today’s information bubbles. The powerful algorithms designed to reinforce our interests also ensure that we see little of what’s new, different or unfamiliar. Biersteker’s Volverium aims to open us up again to a universe of new perspectives by putting you in the middle of it. Blending reality and virtual reality in analogue ways.

Looking through VR glasses, the high tech planetarium like piece places you in the centre of a new universe. Giant lenses turn around you, rhythmically, elegantly distorting and bending reality as you experience it now, creating new viewpoints to look at your surroundings.

The art installation is created in collaboration with musician Jacco Gardner in the context of his new album. Living on the edges of kinetic art, virtual reality and augmented reality the music and installation guide you along the new viewpoints and bent realities.

Engineer: Casper van der Meer, technical lead: Kees Plattel, technical build: Melanie Kool (Advertising, 2016), music: Jacco Gardner.
