Job Opportunity: Lecturer/Educator Illustration

Fri 23 Apr

The Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (WdKA/RUAS), offers a variety of bachelor and master programs in the field of visual culture, art, design, education in arts, and leisure management.

The Majors (of which Illustration is one) are the entry point of study for all Bachelor students. The curriculum of the WdKA is unique because of its interdisciplinary ethos. Students from all majors meet each other in the Practices in the second half of the Bachelor programs - the Practices are interdisciplinary research contexts. Together with the highly unique Stations (advanced workspaces) the Majors and Practices form the three pillars of the WdKA’s curriculum.

At the moment we are looking for:

Lecturer/Educator Illustration (0.2 fte)

Deadline for applications: May 20, 2021

About Illustration

The contemporary illustration practice is dynamic and constantly crossing the borders of several other disciplines. The speed and complexity of technological, political, social and economic developments strongly influence practices in art, design and communication in general. That’s why the professional world is looking for young creatives with a multitude of talents and skills and especially an open yet critical attitude towards these developments. We are aware of the responsibility that we are educating creatives that are going to shape the future of the field and understand it’s importance to society. Illustration is one of the larger majors with approximately 300 students and a relatively small - but growing - interdisciplinary teaching team. We believe illustration is a very important field in a world that is becoming more and more visual. We think illustrators can contribute to the future in a positive and meaningful way, effectively collaborating with the fields of science, technology & politics.

We teach students to develop a strong moral compass; they need to determine what’s most meaningful to them and become conscious of the power of their creative talent and how to apply it to influence society, today and in the future. Therefore we teach students to become familiar with the tools, skills and attitudes we feel are important to the professional practice. Position The Major Illustration is open to hiring a lecturer for a 1 day a week position with a focus on concept development, visualisation (not necessarily drawing) and (critical) visual literacy. We are looking for a hybrid practitioner-teacher who is positive about the possibilities of project-based education, and who wants to grow as an educator. The willingness and ability to work collaboratively is a must, as all of our education is team-based. They should be excited about questioning established norms through visuals and design and be a proponent of critical new media literacy.

Tasks will include

  • Teaching, as part of a team, in courses ranging from the first year to the fourth.
  • Participating in the development of curriculum for the program.
  • Participating in assessments, both in the context of classes you are teaching, and in standalone assessment moments such as annual competence-based assessments and graduation.
  • Responding with flexibility to a workload that varies over the course of the academic year. Requirements
  • A Bachelor degree in fine art, design or a relevant program has our preference.
  • A commitment to developing new forms of design education within the bachelor Illustration program.
  • An interest in project-based education and a willingness to participate in team teaching.
  • EU/ECC work authorization.
  • An excellent command of verbal and written English.
  • An interest and practice based experience to teach in the interdisciplinary Practices is an advantage.
  • Familiarity and an ability to engage with design communities in Rotterdam is a major asset.

Relevant experience in education is a plus, but we encourage very motivated creatives with unusual experience and diverse backgrounds and talents to apply. We would like to enlarge diversity within our team.

The successful candidates will be enthusiastic and thoughtful teachers who are interested in helping the Illustration major to stay ahead of the developments in the creative practice. The ideal candidates will have a desire to grow in the position and take an active role in the life of the program and are keen to develop their educational practice alongside an existing professional design practice.
