The Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, offers a variety of bachelor and master programmes in the fields of visual culture, art, design, education in arts, and leisure management. The professions for which the academy prepares its students are at the heart of the creative industry. The art education programmes play a key role in various knowledge domains including communication & technology, and art & social engagement. These education programmes prepare students for a career in the cultural manufacturing industry: as artists, designers, makers, performers, educators, researchers and organisers. The Willem de Kooning Academy’s curricula are based upon the independence of students working on projects in groups. In addition to theoretical knowledge and supervision by tutors, students also learn and apply skills by working in the Stations. The academy features several Stations, such as the Material Station, the Publication Station, the Interaction Station and the Fabric Station.

About the Fabric Station (FS)
The Fabric Station is an environment where students of various disciplines can develop their textile fabrics and (fashion) products, and are challenged to develop or redevelop new materials. The FS distinguishes itself from a regular fashion and textiles studio through its emphasis on research through making and practical applications. The FS combines traditional textile techniques with digitalisation and sustainability. We focus on innovations in new materials, textiles, and garment-related products. This includes strategies such as recycling, remaking, bio-design, and the development of non-woven materials. The wide variety of learning goals of students in turn requires a broad professional knowledge from the team of instructors, in which each instructor has their own role and field of expertise. The focus of the team of instructors is to help students develop their ideas into working projects, providing individual consultations, station skills, and lessons. For example, we provide skills courses in the following textile techniques: tufting, weaving, knitting, machine embroidery, felting, and dyeing of textiles. Additionally, in the field of fashion, we offer courses in CLO 3D design, realisation of patterns and 3D modelling, draping, leatherworking, and sewing techniques.
